Internationally, the MTM system has enjoyed ever widening acceptance and its spread to other countries occurred rather rapidly. In a few cases, North American multinational companies introduced it within their overseas operations. However, the chief agency for foreign growth was the management counsel membership of the U.S.A./Canada MTM Association, which actively sponsored provisional groups in an affiliate status prior to the formation of the International MTM Directorate (IMD).
Associations achieving Cooperating National Associations (CAN) status in that period were Svenska MTM föringen in Sweden, Schweizerische MTM Vereinigung in Switzerland, l’Association MTM Française in France, and Nederlands MTM Genootschap in Holland.
Once several firms or organizations in a country became involved in MTM training and application, it was natural to organize a national association; this trend continues today under the aegis of the IMD. Since the 5 associations previously named formed the IMD, the number of Cooperating National Associations has tripled to the 15 in the following list:
